How to calculate foot traffic
Foot traffic per observed hour = people counted ÷ observation minutes × 60. For several sessions, divide the total count by the total minutes, then multiply by 60. This describes the periods observed, not daily traffic or future sales.
- Count at a fixed point by the actual shop entrance. Record the session duration and conditions.
- Enter each count and its duration. Compare similar periods across weekdays and weekends.
- Read the observed hourly rate. Keep sampling before drawing conclusions about the rest of the day.
Worked example
Worked example: 84 people in 30 minutes and 63 in another 30 minutes give (84 + 63) ÷ (30 + 30) × 60 = 147 people per observed hour. These are fictional counts.

What this tool cannot tell you
A short count cannot establish demand, purchasing intent or a representative daily total. Unequal-duration sessions are weighted by minutes, not averaged as if they were equal. Do not treat an hourly rate as a prediction.

Is this a free foot traffic estimator for any address?
It is a free calculator for counts you enter, not a source of traffic data for an address. It does not access mobile-location data or measure visitors automatically.
Why not average the hourly rates of all sessions?
When observation lengths differ, a simple average gives short sessions too much influence. Adding the counts and durations first produces the duration-weighted rate for the observed period.
Can I use this to predict daily visitors or sales?
No. It calculates only the rate during your observations. Daily visitors require representative sampling, and sales depend on customer behaviour and other factors not measured here.
